Mike Myers-Bio
Mike Myers – Frederick County, MD ARES Emergency Co-ordinator.
I got my first ham radio license back in 1985 but eventually moved to Texas and did not do anything with ham radio at all. I let my license lapse.
While in Texas I started doing contract work writing software to send text based pages (do you remember pagers or beepers). From that involvement with the paging company I eventually became their contracted engineer and would work on their transmitters in addition to software development. So I never really got away from radio, just not ham radio.
Eventually I moved back to the area still working on paging systems and developing for a company that wrote dispatch software. I still was involved in radio a lot because of the radios used for dispatch systems.
Eventually, I moved completely away from radio for a few years starting my own ISP which was eventually sold. Then I got the itch again and got my Tech and General and then the Extra.
Now, every day I am highly involved in ham radio. Teaching people is something I love to do and get excited when we do testing sessions.
Currently I am an officer in 3 radio clubs and a member of 4 more so I keep pretty busy. I also help to maintain about 20 repeaters in the area.
I am a bleeding edge type of personality. My favorite is all of the digital modes on all bands, Voice and Data.
If you look at my workbench I have a lot of radio and electronics projects always going on and during the pandemic the list of projects has grown exponentially. You can learn more about the radio projects on this site. You can visit my personal website for the electronic projects.
Growing up as a kid I loved anything remote control and till this day I still love to build stuff that can be controlled remotely. That might also explain some of the projects I have going on.
Looking Back, I blame my interest in electronics and radio on my Grandfather who had a TV / Radio repair shop when I was growing up. He was teaching me electronics before I could read or write.
